THC levels in edibles: See the lab tests

All week long we’ve been talking about the THC potency of marijuana-infused products (MIPs) here on The Cannabist. Our exclusive report on THC levels was filled with surprises.

One manufacturer, Dr. J’s, tested poorly across the board showing between .2-5 milligrams on products labeled for 100 milligrams of activated THC. One popular brand, Incredibles, tested over on its 100-milligram chocolate bar with 146 milligrams. And a couple other edibles brands tested close to their targets of 100 milligrams, including the Growing Kitchen (101 milligrams) and Blue Kudu (106 milligrams).

Some of these companies (and many readers, too) have asked to see the actual test results, and they’re all here. All products were tested at least twice, many three times, for accuracy. And all tested numbers include standard deviations provided by Steep Hill Halent, the state-licensed lab that conducted the testing.

Genesis of the report: How did we find out about the problems with THC levels in edibles? Yes, we noticed inconsistencies on our own — and we were also approached by a pot shop owner who had received 400-plus complains. Read the story behind the story.

Reaction to the report: How has Colorado’s marijuana industry reacted to The Post study? And exclusive comments from the veteran chemist who conducted the THC tests

Opinion piece: “In the fledgling industry of retail marijuana, some glitches are expected, but that doesn’t mean they should be accepted,” The Denver Post editorialized on March 11. Read the whole editorial here.

Dr. J’s Star Barz milk chocolate bar (THC on label: 100mg. Actual THC per test: .37mg. Standard deviation: .07mg. Note: A partial unit was tested here, but the results were extrapolated for the whole product by Steep Hill Halent lab director Joseph Evans, who noted, “I took three different, distinct sections for the samples. I was trying to see if it was inhomogeneous. And those three sections gave me results that were pretty close to one another. That tells me that this is a fairly homogeneous product and the rest of the product is likely the same.”)
