If you’ve visited a dispensary, odds are you’ve seen a sci-fi strain or two. From Death Star to Romulan, there’s no dearth of Darth Vader- or Captain Kirk-adjacent flowers.
Enter “Game of Thrones,” the biggest name in fantasy to hit dispensary shelves as the show approaches the end of its fifth season later this month. Whether you’re looking for something that has you as sharp-witted as Tyrion Lannister or just mumbling “Hodor,” these three “GoT”-themed strains are perfect for any fan of the show.
Breeder: Gold Coast Connection
A particularly indica phenotype of SFV (San Fernando Valley) OG Kush, I wouldn’t recommend growing this north of the wall. Or really anything, for that matter, if you live in a fictional tundra. Positively frosty and smelling of the pine indigenous to that area, Whitewalker OG took home top honors at the 2013 High Times Amsterdam Cup, proving it’s not just a marketing gimmick. Leaving me feeling more like the living dead than I had anticipated, this indica-dominant powerhouse almost entirely shut down the speech center of my brain and made movement feel labored. If you’re looking for something lighter, consider DNA Genetics’ White Walker Kush (White Widow x Skywalker OG), which brings more sativa to the table.
Breeder: The Cali Connection
Raise a hand if it feels like the Battle of Blackwater happened so long ago it could have been the First Men fighting it. The epic second season siege was met with critical acclaim, much like Blackwater the strain. The third place finisher at High Times’ 2014 Los Angeles Cannabis Cup, it combines Mendo Purps with that ubiquitous SFV OG Kush in an attempt by breeder Swerve to create a jet black Kush. Perhaps not best for battle, this is another strain I find best for those on the mend (as long as their wounds aren’t wildfire-related). Stoney and sleepy, the berry notes would pair well with a glass of Cersei’s wine.
Breeder: HighRise Seeds
Like dragons, I want to believe this strain exists. As mysterious as Daenerys Targaryen is to most of Westeros, the same goes for Khaleesi Kush and the world of weed. According to several message boards, this cross by Lavatera of Pakistani Kush and Bubblegum quickly sold out when offered online. One grow report noted the strong presence of that Bubblegum sweetness, a nice touch considering the 70 percent indica nature of the strain. It appears that while they’re both the “First of Their Name,” only one is actually seeing much fire lately.
Think you have the next great Game of Thrones strain name? Leave it in the comments, and please don’t be a Joffrey and post spoilers.
