Breckenridge online petition calls for ban on downtown pot shops

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. — A non-binding online petition is asking the Breckenridge Town Council not to allow recreational marijuana shops in the ski resort’s downtown area.

The Summit Daily News reports the petition is an attempt to rally public opposition to downtown pot sales and doesn’t have any legal clout.

The petition doesn’t advocate a blanket ban on recreational marijuana shops but only in the downtown area. It cites a desire to keep the town family-friendly.

About 800 people had signed it by Tuesday.

The Town Council is expected to take a preliminary vote in October on a proposed ordinance allowing recreational pot sales downtown. The council and town staff have been working on the details.

Colorado voters legalized recreational marijuana sales as of Jan. 1.
