Feds investigating Utah gubernatorial candidate’s wife for pot possession

SALT LAKE CITY — Federal prosecutors say they are investigating a Utah gubernatorial candidate’s wife for alleged possession of marijuana.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Utah confirmed the investigation Thursday. Democratic candidate Mike Weinholtz acknowledged the investigation of his wife, Donna Weinholtz, after winning the nomination in April. He said she only uses the illegal drug to treat severe arthritis and nerve pain.

Utah U.S. attorney’s office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch says she cannot comment on the details of the investigation. She did say that U.S. Postal Service inspectors and the Department of Homeland Security were looking into the matter.

Weinholtz’s campaign released a statement after Rydalch’s confirmation saying the status of the investigation appears to be the same as it has been for more than two months.
