Monkey-mask wearing thief targets Wheat Ridge pot shop

Wheat Ridge police say thieves wearing masks including one of a monkey broke into two marijuana dispensaries early Friday morning.

No arrests have been made and it appears the thieves did not get away with marijuana or cash, according to police.

The mask-wearing thieves smashed a window at Best Meds in the 4800 block of Lamar Street at 3:19 a.m., Sgt. Mark Cooney said. A video surveillance camera captured the suspects on film.

The store alarm sounded and an employee inside the business confronted the thieves. When the thieves saw the employee they fled back through the window, Cooney said.

Burglars also hit Options Medical, another dispensary at 9085 W. 44th Avenue.

“It doesn’t look like very much was stolen,” Cooney said.

He said that the store has a safe for product.

Detectives believe the two break-ins are connected.

“It seems awfully coincidental if it’s not the same people,” Cooney said.

Video at Best Meds shows the thieves arriving in a car. Police will review the tape to see if they can see its license plate.

Best Meds also was burglarized a few months ago, Cooney said. In that case young teens were captured on camera, arriving on foot.

Cooney said most marijuana dispensaries don’t keep money on site at night.
