Sheriff: Missing Vail man burned in hash oil explosion faces felony charges

Authorities in Eagle County say a 24-year-old man faces felony charges after sustaining second-degree burns on 25 percent of his body in an Eagle-Vail hash oil explosion Wednesday afternoon.

Ryne Wilhelmi will be charged with criminal mischief and first-degree arson — both felonies — and reckless endangerment, officials say.

Fire crews were called to the 200 block of Eagle Road at about 12:45 p.m. on reports of a small fire.

“When deputies with the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene they determined that (Wilhelmi) was suspected of making butane hash oil which caused the explosion,” a sheriff’s office news release said.

The oil is made with butane and marijuana in a highly pressurized tube, the office said.

Anyone with information on Wilhelmi is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (970) 328-8500.
