Police: Shooting of Pueblo boy, 13, linked with marijuana plants

A 13-year-old Pueblo boy who police believe was trying to steal marijuana plants from a backyard was rushed to a Denver hospital Saturday after he was shot with a pellet gun.

The shooting — which led to the arrest of a man — happened about 2:30 a.m. on the 400 block of Washington Street.

The pellet entered the boy’s chest and came to rest between vital organs. Officers found the boy in the middle of street, his clothes scattered around him, police said.

Jason Lucero, 34, told police he shot the boy, who he thought was an intruder.

“The investigation revealed that the juvenile was in the neighboring yard at the time he was shot,” Pueblo police said in a news release.

Lucero was arrested and booked into the Pueblo County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bond.

The boy is in stable condition, police said, adding that they are investigating the incident.
