Good body butter is a great thing.

More powerful than the average lotion and less greasy than body oil, extra-emollient body butter is ideal for chapped hands, cracked cuticles, calloused knees and elbows — not to mention everyday dry skin.

But many of today’s popular body butters are made and scented with ingredients better-suited to the tropics than to Colorado, and not everyone wants to smell like a fruit salad.

Hempz offers an effective, relatively benign-smelling body butter option for people who want the hydrating benefits of this type of moisturizer without the greasy, fruity hangover. Hemp seed oil is the key ingredient in this product, which the manufacturer describes as “ultra-rich, lightly whipped, all-over moisturizer that dramatically rehydrates, soothes and nourishes dry skin.”

That it does.

But while this body butter is “enriched with 100% Pure Natural Hemp Seed Oil,” a quick glance at the ingredient list confirms that it is not 100 percent natural (nor does it claim to be). Few skincare products are 100 percent natural, especially those found in mainstream stores.

There is a real benefit to this product besides those touted by manufacturers: Its lack of frills. No fancy packaging or funky fragrance. Yes, there is a delicate scent thanks to hints of cucumber and jasmine, but that is not what users will notice about Hempz Original Herbal Body Butter.

Instead they will notice how good it makes their skin feel. So this is a product that gets used often and is missed when the clear tub is rubbed dry.
