BOULDER, Colo.—The number of people ticketed for smoking marijuana in public is up nearly four times in Boulder since voters legalized recreational use of the drug.
Amendment 64 allows possession of small amounts of pot but smoking it in public is still illegal. So far during 2013, the Daily Camera (http://bit.ly/19ItJDC) reports that 113 people have been ticketed for public use of marijuana, up from 29 in all of 2012.
Police Chief Mark Beckner and District Attorney Stan Garnett think people either don’t know that public smoking is still illegal or feel emboldened by the law.
Garnett says he has told police departments he’s committed to prosecuting cases of public smoking as well as distributing marijuana to minors.
