Maine marijuana recount update: ‘No’ campaign claims small gain

AUGUSTA, Maine — A campaign that opposes the legalization of marijuana in Maine says it has gained a small number of votes in a recount that’s heading into its second week.

Maine voters chose to legalize recreational marijuana in a Nov. 8 referendum. The secretary of state’s office says it passed by 4,073 votes out of more than 750,000 cast.

The Portland Press Herald reports about a sixth of ballots have been recounted by hand so far. The count is resuming Monday despite snow that is slowing down state and local governments.

The opposition campaign that asked for the recount did not provide specific numbers of how much it has gained. The state won’t release vote totals until the recount is finished.

The recount is expected to be finished early next year.
