From activism to commercialization: The changing Denver 420 culture

For 10 years running, photographer Kim Sidwell has put a lens on Denver’s 420 Rally.

Sidwell, the proprietor of Cannabis Camera, speaks with Cannabist editor-in-chief Ricardo Baca about how the event has changed since she started documenting it in 2006 when it “felt more like a celebration.”

Through the years, activism grew, she says. But after legalization, those grassroots efforts fell away, she says.

“From my perspective, it seems to have lost the sense of activism that it once had,” she says.
