Top Nixon adviser: We invented the war on drugs to vilify blacks, hippies: President Richard Nixon and his administration invented the war on drugs to vilify and unjustly punish African Americans and anti-war hippies, according to a just-published interview with Nixon’s late domestic-policy adviser John Ehrlichman. The interview with Ehrlichman — published in Harper’s April issue — is so alarmingly dastardly that it’s hard to imagine how Colorado-based journalist Dan Baum (mostly) kept it to himself for all these years. —Report by Ricardo Baca

Decriminalize all drug use for a better world, these medical experts say: A group of 22 medical experts convened by Johns Hopkins University and The Lancet have called for the decriminalization of all nonviolent drug use and possession. Citing a growing scientific consensus on the failures of the global war on drugs, the experts further encourage countries and U.S. states to “move gradually toward regulated drug markets and apply the scientific method to their assessment.” Their report comes ahead of a special UN General Assembly Session on drugs to be held next month, where the world’s countries will re-evaluate the past half-century of drug policy and, in the hope of many experts, chart a more public-health-centered approach going forward. –Report by Christopher Ingraham, The Washington Post

Is Colorado pot too strong: A proposed ballot initiative and an amendment to a bill in the state House would cap the THC potency of recreational cannabis and marijuana products at a percentage below most of those products’ current averages. The initiative would limit the potency of “marijuana and marijuana products” to 15 percent or 16 percent THC. The average potency of Colorado pot products is already higher — 17.1 percent for cannabis flower and 62.1 percent for marijuana extracts, according to a state study. —Report by By The Denver Post’s John Ingold and The Cannabist’s Ricardo Baca.
