Snoop Dogg rolls out a weed-friendly lifestyle website: Merry Jane

Snoop Dogg’s latest cannabis-centric business venture may sound familiar to those who visit The Cannabist.

The rap mogul is teaming up with entrepreneur Ted Chung to launch the Merry Jane media platform, which will feature original videos and “a cross-section of cultural and lifestyle features, along with the latest cannabis policy, business, and economic news,” according to a news release.

Yep, it sounds a lot like the information that has been shared here in The Cannabist since late-December 2013, when we started to chronicle the world’s first legal marijuana sales in Colorado and have been tracking the quickly evolving cannabis culture ever since.

Snoop Dogg, who has branched into tech investing, announced the Merry Jane startup Monday at Tech Crunch Disrupt in San Francisco, where he shared one of the motivations behind the project: the chance to talk openly about marijuana use.

“There are so many people in the closet right now. … We’re a better world if everybody comes out of the closet and just admits that they like to smoke,” he said about Merry Jane.

And then he declared: “My name is Snoop Dogg and I’m a stoner.”

Merry Jane is backed by Snoop Dogg’s Casa Verde Capital investment group and others. The site is set to officially launch in October, but people can sign up now for a chance to check out the beta site.

Snoop Dogg has kept in close contact with Colorado in the legal era, performing around the April 20 marijuana holiday this year and in 2014. He got involved in the 2014 gubernatorial campaign. He also recorded a video message for the Centennial State ahead of last week’s one-day pot tax holiday.

We’re intrigued by the Deflowered series of video interviews that will be on Merry Jane (check in at the 8:30 mark on the above video) and flattered that Snoop appears to be running with our theme.
