Flaming Lips in Colorado: ‘Backstage there’s a giant bowl of marijuana …’

When you combine the Flaming Lips’ otherworldly space rock with the (altered) state of Colorado’s open weed laws, it makes for a trippy night out.

And when the Lips played Mumford & Sons’ traveling Gentlemen of the Road festival in the mountain town of Salida this past weekend, of course Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne — known as a fan of the psychedelic himself — had something to say about the availability of legal weed in Colorado, most notably in the festival’s backstage area.

“Backstage there’s a giant bowl of marijuana,” Coyne told the crowd at one point on Friday night, suggesting via gestures that it was as big as a laundry basket, “and you can just take … as much as you want.”

Bill Murray: “The terror of marijuana was probably overstated”

Coyne wasn’t the only artist to shout out to the giant bowl of weed backstage, but his genuine excitement stood out.
