Polls: California marijuana legalization expected to pass: California marijuana legalization is trending favorably among voters, two polls released this week show. Fifty-two percent of California voters surveyed by Survey USA support Proposition 64, the proposed measure that would allow for recreational adult-use sales in the state, according to the Orange County Register report. A second poll, conducted by USC Dornsife and the Los Angeles Times, showed that 58 percent of the state’s voters favored the legalization measure and that the support spanned “most lines of age, race, income and gender,” the Los Angeles Times reported. –Report by The Cannabist’s Alicia Wallace
What new federal data shows about teen pot use: Underage drug and alcohol use continues to fall across the board, according to the latest federal data released Thursday by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Teen cigarette use has fallen by more than two-thirds since 2002. Alcohol use has fallen by nearly half. And even teen marijuana use — a topic of much debate as states consider legalizing recreational use of the drug — has dropped significantly since 2002. –Report by The Washington Post’s Christopher Ingraham
The marijuana breathalyzer: When will it hit the streets?: A marijuana breathalyzer is one step closer on its road to commercialization. Hound Labs Inc., an Oakland startup founded by an emergency room doctor/reserve deputy sheriff and a patent attorney, announced Tuesday that its handheld device that measures the presence of THC in breath successfully completed roadside field testing by law enforcement officers. The device — which was developed in partnership with scientists at the University of California, Berkeley — was designed to detect impairment from recent THC consumption via smoking pot or ingesting edibles, Reuters and others have reported.
