DENVER, CO - JUNE 27: Honey bees work furiously as they create honey comb on the left, while others lay eggs and tend to larvae, lower right, in one of the four hives of bees on the roof of Union Station on June 27, 2016 in Denver, Colorado. The hives, which were installed last fall, each have between 3,000 to 10,000 bees in them. The urban beekeeping initiative is funded by five Larimer Associate restaurants inside Union Station's Great Hall who will also be the recipients of the honey. They hope to have the first harvest this summer. (Photo by Helen H. Richardson/The Denver Post)

Legalizing marijuana in California could create $6.5 billion market by 2020: California legalizing recreational marijuana could grow the industry there to $6.5 billion in 2020 — and also serve as a “watershed moment” for the industry in and outside the United States, according to a report released Tuesday. Market research firms the Arcview Group and New Frontier delved into California’s massive and uniquely complicated cannabis industry to project its direction and what may be in store if voters pass Proposition 64 in November. If the Adult Use of Marijuana Act succeeds and is implemented by 2018, California’s legal marijuana sales likely will climb by $1.6 billion within the first year, according to the Arcview and New Frontier market report. –Report by The Cannabist’s Alicia Wallace

No. 6630507: Why the government has patents on pot plant compounds: It may not have quite the same ring to it as a certain seven-digit number made famous in song in 1981, but 6,630,507 has been growing increasingly internet-famous since last week. Following the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s inaction on rescheduling marijuana, legalization proponents have responded by taking to the internet to highlight Patent No. 6,630,507 — telling the DEA to “talk to the hand” by writing “6,630,507” on their palms, hashtagging the number and linking to past articles on the topic. –Report by The Cannabist’s Alicia Wallace
