Colorado man gets 18-36 months in Nebraska prison for 515 pounds of pot

LINCOLN, Neb. — A 69-year-old western Colorado man has been sent to a Nebraska prison for having around 515 pounds of marijuana in his pickup.

Steven McElmury was sentenced Tuesday to 18 to 36 months. He’d pleaded guilty to possession for sale.

Prosecutors say McElmury, who lives in Cedaredge, Colorado, was pulled over on eastbound Interstate 80 near Lincoln on Jan. 21. A drug-sniffing dog taken to the scene alerted officers to the scent of drugs, and the pot was found in heat-sealed bags stuffed into four boxes, four duffel bags and a tote.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office estimated the pot’s resale value at more than $2.5 million.
