Recreational marijuana shops have opened smoothly in Colorado. Now state lawmakers want to close a loophole allowing some to grow and sell large amounts of pot without permits and licenses.
Colorado’s Chief Medical Officer and the head of the agency that regulates marijuana asked a panel of lawmakers Tuesday to take a new look at marijuana caregivers. Those are the 5,000 or so people in Colorado who have permission to grow pot for people on the medical marijuana registry. The caregivers don’t have to go through extensive background checks or pay the fees required of people who grow or sell pot commercially.
Colorado lawmakers will consider limiting caregivers to five medical marijuana patients and 30 plants. Health officials say a handful of caregivers grow for dozens or hundreds of people.
