Gov. Hickenlooper parties with the Flaming Lips in Aspen; Lips Instagram “#legalizedit”

It’s a totally crappy Instagram, yes, but what a pairing: Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.

Coyne Instagrammed the photo Monday from Aspen, where the band was playing consecutive New Year’s shows at the intimate rock club the Belly Up. Coyne tagged the photo: “Yesss!! Hangin with Govornor Hickenlooper!!! @bellyupaspen fuck yeah!!!!! #flaminglips #legalizedit”

Coyne has talked candidly about his penchant for marijuana before. Hickenlooper, however, opposed Amendment 64, which legalized recreational weed — and he wasn’t planning on going out to pot shops on opening day to support the newly legalized drug.

But still, #legalizedit.

Other local gems from Coyne’s Instagram account via his three-night Colorado stint (including a Dec. 29 date opening for String Cheese Incident at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield):

“Goin through Okie From Muskogee with The Cheeeeeeese!!!!” — Backstage video of the Lips jamming with String Cheese on Merle Haggard’s most lasting tune.

“A Day In The Life!!!!! @bellyupaspen #flaminglips” — New Year’s Eve video of the Lips covering the Beatles (in true, psych-rock fashion) in Aspen.

“Goin through tunnels goin through mountains… Cool!!!” — The Lips getting transported back to Denver via the Eisenhower Tunnel.

Sounds like Coyne & Co. enjoyed their Colorado retreat.
