Denver council decriminalizes marijuana for young adults

The Denver City Council on Monday passed a measure to decriminalize possession of up to an ounce of pot for people between the ages of 18 and 21.

Penalties would be a range of fines but no jail time. Until now, violators faced hefty fines and up to a year in jail.

Fines would now be $150 for a first offense, $500 for a second offense and $999 for a subsequent one.

A measure also passed to keep pot that is on city-owned property at least 1,000 feet from schools.
